Marathon registration explained: drawings, qualification and approved entry routes
Marathon registration is a process, not a single universal checkout. One race may offer an open sale, another a drawing, and another qualification or organizer-approved charity and travel routes. Each route has its own conditions. Build a small evidence file before booking the wider trip: the current rules, the submitted application, any decision and the final confirmed entry. START LINE does not sell or secure bibs.

Your preparation checklist
Tick items as you prepare. Checkmarks are saved on this device when browser storage is available; they do not reserve or register anything.
Plan your next steps
- Select the exact race, edition and distance, then open the organizer’s current entry page.
- List the routes for which you actually meet the published conditions.
- Record application, decision, payment and any further confirmation deadlines separately.
- Apply only through the organizer or a partner explicitly named by it.
- Verify the final account status before treating the place as secured or booking inflexible travel.
An application is not a race number
Label each record accurately: information request, application submitted, awaiting decision, accepted and paid. A confirmation that a form arrived may not mean acceptance. Likewise, a payment authorization may not describe the final status of a drawing application. Read the message rather than only its subject line. If the account and email disagree, resolve that difference with official support before making further commitments.
Qualification means meeting a process, not buying certainty
A time standard may be one eligibility condition rather than an unconditional place. The B.A.A., for example, explicitly distinguishes achieving a qualifying standard from guaranteed acceptance. Read which results are accepted, what evidence is required and which date determines your category. Avoid relying on an independent predictor or another runner’s experience as proof that your own application will succeed.
Read the full charity commitment
An organizer-approved charity route may involve fundraising, separate fees, payment obligations and deadlines. Ask for the written terms before agreeing, including what happens if fundraising falls short or you cannot travel. Confirm the organization appears on the race’s own current partner list. A good cause and a legitimate registration route are separate checks; take time to establish both before sending money.
Separate a travel package from race entry
An approved operator may bundle accommodation, services and an entry, but the exact inclusions matter. Check who issues the entry confirmation, which services are mandatory and what can be canceled. Compare the total trip cost rather than only a headline room rate. Do not assume buying a hotel package near the course includes a bib unless the written agreement explicitly says it does.
Put time zones beside every deadline
Store the organizer’s original deadline with its stated time zone, then add your local reminder separately. Create a reminder early enough to resolve an account or payment problem during support hours. Keep submitted information and confirmation references in a private folder. Avoid scheduling the whole task for the final minute; a missed password-reset email should not decide the trip.
Treat transfers and deferrals as event-specific
Read cancellation, refund, transfer and deferral policies independently because those words describe different options. An event may allow one and forbid another, or apply different terms to different entry paths. Never assume a bib can be resold informally. If circumstances change, use the official procedure and obtain written confirmation of the outcome rather than relying on a private agreement with another runner.
Protect the accepted place after the decision
Once accepted, check whether another payment, profile update or deadline remains. Save the final acceptance record, monitor official messages and keep contact information accurate. Add collection and travel tasks only after the entry status is clear. The registration evidence file should make it possible to answer a simple question months later: what exactly has been confirmed, and what still needs action?
Before you finish planning
- I know the difference between my application and final acceptance.
- Every deadline has its original time zone.
- My provider is listed by the organizer.
- I have read the cancellation and transfer terms.
Common questions
Are all major marathons entered by drawing?
No. Entry routes vary by race and year. Read the organizer’s current options, including the conditions of any guaranteed pathway.
Can a qualifying result guarantee Boston entry?
Not on its own. The B.A.A. states that meeting a standard offers an opportunity to apply, subject to its acceptance process.
Can START LINE check or sell me a bib?
No. We provide independent information. Keep account, payment and identity details within official channels and approved providers.
